Substation Maintenance Technician (Field)

ROLE OBJECTIVE:

The Substation Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and testing of 130V, 48V, and 24V battery bank systems located in electrical substations and telecom facilities throughout Alberta. He/she will also be responsible for soil resistance and ground resistance testing of grounding systems associated with electrical substations throughout Alberta. He/she will interface with engineering staff, construction crews, clients/owners, and therefore must be able to communicate in an efficient manner. He/she will be responsible for promoting the professional image of efficiency, quality and technical competence.

KEY PERFORMANCE MEASURES:

Responsible for the delivery of quality maintenance practices on various projects in a safe and efficient manner for a variety of customers. Projects are expected to be on time, on budget, and on quality while maintaining project team relationships and maximizing profit.

To effectively complete the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be able to complete the following:

• Install, test, and commission battery bank systems pertaining to electrical substations and telecom facilities
• Perform maintenance duties on battery bank systems pertaining to electrical substations and telecom facilities
• Perform maintenance duties on grounding systems pertaining to electrical substations
• Set up and operate specialized and standard test equipment to diagnose, test, and analyze the performance of battery bank and grounding systems
• Installation and verification of field wiring
• Verification of external devices such as HMI terminals and annunciator boards
• Supervise junior technicians and technologists
• Ensure field safety requirements are met
• Organize and develop maintenance schedules
• Writing of maintenance reports

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Journeyman Electrician or
• Journeyman PSE (Power Systems Electrician) or
• Diploma of Technology in Electrical Engineering
• Minimum of 2 years direct experience in field testing/commissioning
• Familiarity with HMI systems and annunciator boards
• Familiarity with batteries and UPS systems
• Familiarity with substation grounding systems
• Familiarity with equipment test sets (Megger BITE, Megger DET2/2, Fluke handheld meters)
• Be physically able to perform heavy lifting duties
• Excellent grasp of the English language (verbal and written)
• Excellent computer skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of site safety practices
• Must have a valid driver's license
• Willingness to travel extensively
• Willingness to work various shifts
• Willingness to work overtime as required
• Willingness to be on-call
