Community Involvement

As a Calgary based construction company, CANA is dedicated to the growth and development of the community in which we live and work. CANA's President and CEO, John Simpson, is committed to supporting the Calgary community, having recently been awarded the Silver Award for Community Involvement from the Premier of Alberta. John Simpson's contributions to Alberta include serving on the Foothills Hospital Board, the Calgary Regional Health Authority, the Canadian Council of Public-Private Partnerships, the Olds College Board, the Canadian Equestrian Team Board, the Alberta Alpine Ski Foundation and the Canadian Olympic Foundation and as the first Chair of the University of Calgary Deans Advisory Committee for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. John's personal attributes are reflected in his approach to business. Our Senior Management Staff are encouraged to take an active role in the Calgary construction community and offer their time to charitable associations and organizations that help to stimulate the growth and development of our city. Their roles include chairing councils and being active members for committees and associations.

The mission of the CANA Group of Companies is to promote social responsibility as an integral part of business operations, whereby our actions promote a sense of positive social change. CANA is committed to community development; proven by the provision of construction services at discounted rates for community organizations and helping to fund projects for not-for-profit organizations in Alberta. We are also committed to environmental sustainability by providing building alternatives that reduce our environmental footprint in the most economical fashion, as a means to encourage sustainable development by owners.

The University of Calgary: Simpson Family Endowment

The Simpson Family Endowment was established in 1988 with the purpose of launching the Graduate Program in Physical Education for two years and then initiating the operation of the Sport Medicine Centre by supporting research, teaching and administrative activities. The Simpson Family made an initial donation to the University of Calgary of $1,000,000 that was matched by the province of Alberta Capital Matching program. With continued interest on the initial investment, the Simpson Family Endowment is now worth over $5,000,000 in support of the University Of Calgary Faculty Of Kinesiology.

The endowment has also supported students, graduates and research technicians by financing research/ fellowship programs and the purchase of medical and scientific research equipment. The interest of the endowment has also been instrumental in supporting the basic and applied research activities of the Roger Jackson Centre for Health and Wellness.

The Simpson Family and the CANA Group of Companies are extensively involved with the University of Calgary. The University's gymnasium is named after John's father, the late Jack Simpson. This unprecedented support of the University of Calgary has earned the Simpson Family and the CANA Group of Companies the respect and admiration of the university community.

The University of Calgary: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Simpson Ranch Chair in Beef Health and Wellness

John Simpson acted as the Inaugural Chair for the University Of Calgary Faculty Of Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee and was instrumental in establishing the faculty in Alberta, and in Calgary. In recognition of John's early support, the University named its first Veterinary Medicine Research Chair in honor of the Simpson Ranch. In turn, the Simpson Family donated $2,000,000 to fund the Chair. The Chair will focus on beef cattle production from conception to consumer and will work closely within the industry and the government to advance health and wellness research and protocol implementation. The Simpson Ranch also plays an important role in the education of DVM students, engaging them in the beef industry outside of their traditional education.

The Mustard Seed

The CANA Group of Companies are proud supporters of the Mustard Seed and Brenda's House, a transitional home for homeless families. This past year our generous contributions in support of the Bannerman/Clark Christmas Day Dinner meant that the organization was able to serve 1600 meals at the Mustard Seed and 100 meals with presents at Brenda's House.

Run for your Life

Since 1997, the CANA Group of Companies has held the annual and biannual "Run for your Life" competition that encourages employees to get involved in the community by competing for the local charity of their choice. Some of the charities have included the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lupus Society of Alberta and War Amps among many others. CANA employees have raised thousands of dollars for local charities in support of the CANA initiative to promote positive social change.
