About CANA Construction
The CANA Group of Companies originated in Calgary, Alberta and is owned 100% by the Simpson family. It is comprised of CANA Construction, CANA Utilities (infrastructure and utility construction), CANA High Voltage and Shepard Development Corporation (commercial, retail and industrial land development).
CANA Limited was incorporated in 1942 with the incorporation of Burns and Dutton Concrete & Construction Co. Ltd. A subsidiary of Standard Gravel, Burns and Dutton was owned by three individuals: Red Dutton (a former player and president of the NHL), Reg Jennings, and Bob Burns. In 1949, the company hired Jack Simpson as Chief Engineer, who had been proclaimed by Time Magazine as a "brilliant young engineer." Irv Thomas joined Burns & Dutton in 1949 and retired in 1984 as President and C.E.O. of CANA Limited. As the Chairman of the company, Jack solidified the company by assembling successful bids and overseeing construction projects through to completion.
In 1984 when Jack Simpson passed away, his son, John became the President of the CANA Group of Companies.
